World No. 22 Daria Kasatkina won't be defending her St. Petersburg title this year as she has withdrawn from the tournament. Ana Konjuh, ranked at No. 54 in the world, has also withdrawn from St. Petersburg. Following the withdrawals of Kasatkina and Konjuh, places in the St.

Petersburg main draw opened for Jaqueline Cristian and Aliksanda Sasnovich.

Kasatkina, 24, has made six appearances in St.

Petersburg throughout her career. Kasatkina debuted in St. Petersburg in 2016, when she made the semifinal before losing to Belinda Bencic. Kasatkina reached another St. Petersburg semifinal in 2018, before reaching her first final at the tournament last year.

Kasatkina was 6-3 2-1 up before Margarita Gasparyan retired the final.

Kasatkina last played at the Australian Open

Kasatkina enjoyed a good Australian summer as she made back-to-back semifinals at the Melbourne Summer Set 2 and Sydney.

Kasatkina then made the Australian Open third round before losing to Iga Swiatek. Swiatek, the 2020 French Open champion, beat Kasatkina 6-2 6-3. “That was really intense match. Tactically I did a good job of not letting her use her topspin on the forehand.

I’m glad that I was the first one to switch the direction to the line so I could have more initiative," Swiatek said after the match. Kasatkina had the first break points of the match but she failed to convert any of her two break points in the third game.

After missing out on her break point chances, Kasatkina lost her serve in the fourth game. Swiatek saved two break points in the seventh game before claiming her second break of the match in the seventh game to seal the opener.

Kasatkina dropped her serve in the second game of the second set but broke Swiatek in the third game. Kasatkina blew two break points in the fifth game and then lost her serve in the following game. Swiatek then held on to her serve the rest of the way to book a straight-set win. It remains to be seen when will Kasatkina return to action.
