Naomi Osaka jokes coach might 'scold' her despite Miami victory

Former world No. 1 Naomi Osaka admitted she went against the tactic of her coach Wim Fisette and joked after the match her coach might scold her for that. Osaka, who received a wildcard into Miami, handed a 6-3 6-4 loss to Alison Riske in the Miami round-of-16 on Monday.

Osaka pretty much knew what to expect from Riske as it was their third meeting. Osaka now leads the head-to-head against Riske 2-1. “Wim [Fisette] told me to hit heavy on [Riske’s] forehand but clearly I was playing her game because for me I have to think to hit heavy," Osaka said on Tennis Channel after the match, per Tennishead.

“I just wanted to see what would happen if I just played regular, like what I wanted to do. “So he might scold me for that a little bit”.

Osaka got the job done in straight sets

Riske put the pressure on Osaka early on but the Japanese avoided going down by an early break as she saved four break points in the opening game.

After saving four break points, Osaka earned the first break of the match in the second game. Osaka had a chance to seal the opener in the eighth game but missed out on four set points on Riske's serve. However, blowing four set points didn't affect Osaka as the Japanese routinely served out for the first set in the ninth game.

After losing the first set, Riske regrouped at the start of the second set and took an early 2-0 lead. Unfortunately for Riske, her lead was short-lived as Osaka broke back in the third game. Riske had a chance to go up by a break again but blew three break points in the fourth game.

Riske paid the price for blowing three break points in the fourth game as Osaka broke the American in the fifth game to go up by a set and a break in the second set. Osaka then had a chance to go up by a double break but Riske saved two break points in the seventh game to reduce the deficit to 4-3. Osaka missed out on her first match point in the ninth game but served out for the match in the following game.
