Lindsay Davenport: Iga Swiatek showed us how badly she wants to be No. 1

Former world No. 1 Lindsay Davenport says Iga Swiatek deserves to be the new No. 1 as she thinks the Pole has proved how badly she wants to be the best player in the world. Swiatek hasn't lost a match in a while as she has won her last 17 matches.

On Saturday, Swiatek handed a 6-4 6-0 loss to former world No. 1 Naomi Osaka in the Miami Masters final. With the victory over Osaka, Swiatek won her 17th match in a row and lifted her third consecutive title. As a reward, Swiatek replaced Ashleigh Barty as the new No.

1 at this week's updated WTA rankings list. “How badly do they really want it? Iga showed us the last six weeks how much she wants to be at the top of women’s tennis," Davenport said on Tennis Channel.

Osaka: Swiatek deserves to be No. 1

Osaka beat Swiatek when they first met at the 2019 Toronto Masters. Three years later, Swiatek got her revenge over Osaka. “It’s definitely a challenge,” Osaka told reporters after losing to Swiatek.

“The last time I played her, it wasn’t like this at all. I definitely learned a lot. She is definitely worthy of her title as No.1. I’m going to learn a lot from her, and watching this match back again”.

Swiatek is hoping to play Osaka many more times. “I’m pretty glad that we could play this match,” Swiatek said to Osaka during the trophy presentation. “I think it’s the start of a great rivalry.

You are really an inspiration and the sport is better with you”. After winning Indian Wells and Miami, Swiatek became the fourth WTA player to complete the Sunshine Double. Swiatek joins the Double Sunshine club that features Stefi Graf, Kim Clijsters and Victoria Azarenka.

“It’s really exciting,” Swiatek said in press afterward. “I’m being compared to the players who are really my idols when I was younger — I wouldn’t even dream of being in that position. So I’m really satisfied and proud of myself”.
