Danielle Collins praises Naomi Osaka, Bianca Andreescu

American tennis star Danielle Collins has applauded Naomi Osaka and Bianca Andreescu for openly speaking about mental health and raising awareness about the importance of good mental health. Last year, Osaka pulled out of the French Open and opened up about battling depression and anxiety.

Since then, Osaka has become a major advocate for athletes' mental health. Andreescu, who won her maiden Grand Slam title at the 2019 US Open, announced in December she would not be playing in Melbourne. In a message Andreescu posted on her social media, Andreescu opened about some of her struggles and said she needed time to work on herself.

“I think in the last couple of years we’ve seen a lot more conversation around mental health and it’s been great to see more players speak up about it and be honest because I think from an outsider’s perspective, tennis is a very exciting, glamorous world we seem to be living in and it’s not always that way,” Collins told Eurosport.

Collins: We have all gone through tough periods

Collins says anyone goes through rough periods but some just stay silent and do not want to speak about it. Osaka and Andreescu openly speaking about some of her problems has maybe helped someone open and seek help.

“I think all of us have our things that we deal with. And I think any time people can be open and honest about what they’re going through it might help someone that’s really struggling," Collins added. “So I admire both of those women for prioritising that and being so willing to share their experience in such a genuine way.

I admire her for that and certainly admire her for the game that she plays and the way she fights on court and the incredible athlete that she is and the achievements that she’s had. I think we’ll have a good battle against each other”.
