Emma Raducanu accepts wildcard to start grass season next week in Nottingham

British tennis star Emma Raducanu has accepted a wildcard into Nottingham, the tournament has announced. For the second consecutive year, Raducanu will be kicking off her grass season next week in Nottingham. Raducanu, 19, made her Nottingham debut last year, when she was beaten in the first round by fellow compatriot Harriet Dart.

Reflecting on the decision to accept a wildcard into Nottingham, Raducanu said it is a special event for her since that's the place where she made her WTA debut. “I’m excited to return to Nottingham and it will be a great opportunity to play in front of British crowds for the first time this year," Raducanu said.

“This event will always be special to me as I played my first tournament on the WTA Tour here last June and I can’t wait to go back”.

Raducanu didn't make it far at the French Open

Raducanu is playing her first full season on the WTA Tour and most recently she made her French Open debut.

At Roland Garros, Raducanu defeated Linda Noskova to clinch her first French Open victory, before losing to Aliaksandra Sasnovich in her following match. Following an early French Open, Raducanu decided to take a wildcard into Nottingham and kick off her grass season next week.

Raducanu will certainly be hoping to do well in Nottingham and Birmingham as a good preparation for Wimbledon could be the key for her success at The Championships. Raducanu, who was once asking for autographs at Wimbledon, will now be hoping to become a champion at The All England Club.

"I remember my first trip to Wimbledon with my coach and another player who was my age. We were asking everyone for their autographs – and I mean everyone! I’ve still got photographs from that day. To be able to actually say that I’ve played on those courts, especially Court One and hopefully Centre Court this year, is pretty special," Raducanu told during her conversation with Gemma Chan for ELLE UK.
