Brutally honest Jelena Ostapenko roasts opponent: My level is way better (WATCH)

World No. 16 Jelena Ostapenko beat Rebecca Marino to progress into the Birmingham round-of-16 and after the match made it perfectly clear how she felt about her Canadian opponent. Ostapenko was up by a set and two breaks but Marino somehow managed to force a third set.

However, Ostapenko was able to regain her focus and seal a 6-2 5-7 6-3 victory. “The biggest opponent to me was myself because I played really well until 6-2, 5-1. She didn’t really do anything. She didn’t change anything until that score then I started to fight against myself.

I started to miss some balls but I’m glad I won because my level is way better than hers today and I showed it,” Ostapenko said. "The main thing she has is the serve. And once you get her into into the really - I think I won like 95 percent of the points.

Just the challenge was to return her serve."

Ostapenko survived the Marino challenge

Ostapenko got off to a slow start to the match as Marino opened an early 2-0 lead.

Down by an early break, Ostapenko responded by claiming three breaks in a row and winning six games in a row to overturn the early deficit and win the opener. After losing the first set, Marino ended Ostapenko's run of six consecutive games as she served out the opening game of the second set.

Ostapenko then went on another run, winning five games in a row to take a 5-1 lead in the second set. Just when it seemed the match was over, Marino claimed three breaks in a row and won six consecutive games to win the second set and force a decider.

After blowing a big second set lead, Ostapenko responded well as she broke Marino twice in the third set and managed to clinch a three-set victory. It was the first meeting between Ostapenko and Marino. Ostapenko plays Dayana Yastremska next.
