Ons Jabeur rose to a new career-high ranking of No. 3 in the world this Monday and now she has set her eyes on "catching" Anett Kontaveit and Iga Swiatek. Last October, Jabeur made tennis history when she became the first Arab woman to break into the top-10 player in the world.
Since then, Jabeur has been slowly improving her ranking position and now she is a top-5 player. Swiatek, who hasn't lost a match since mid-February, is far ahead of everyone as she has 8,631 ranking points. Second-ranked Kontaveit follows with 4,511, while third-ranked Jabeur has 4,340 points in her collection.
“My goal this season is to catch Iga maybe, I don’t know, let’s try it and maybe have a rivalry with Iga; that would be great. I have my eyes on the No. 2 spot for sure,” Jabeur told Arab News.
Jabeur aims her maiden Grand Slam title at Wimbledon
The past year has been great for Jabeur as her best results have come in the past 12 months.
A year ago, Jabeur reached her maiden Wimbledon quarterfinal before losing to Aryna Sabalenka. Jabeur was happy with her 2021 Wimbledon result but now she aims to do better at The Championships. “I feel like now I’m a different player.
I am handling much better the pressure; putting more expectations on myself because now, if you tell me I’ll be happy with a quarterfinal at Wimbledon, I’ll tell you ‘no, I want to do better.’ Also coming as a top-10 player is a much different position than being 20-something in the world.
I think now I’ve played even more matches, so the confidence is higher for sure, and so many situations I can manage much better. Like if you’re being up, or serving for the set, or playing someone more aggressive, I think I can handle those matches much better than before”.
