Iga Swiatek comments on Maja Chwalinska beating depression, enjoying success

Polish tennis star Iga Swiatek reveals she is and Maja Chwalinska are best friends and admitted she is extremely happy to see her fellow compatriot making her Grand Slam breakthrough at Wimbledon. A year ago, Chwalinska announced an indefinite break from tennis as she wanted to take some time to address her mental health and take care of herself.

12 months later, Chwalinska won three qualifying matches to earn her Grand Slam debut at Wimbledon. On Monday, Chwalinska upset Katerina Siniakova in the Wimbledon first round for her maiden Grand Slam victory. "We are best friends.

I can tell you a lot about her, we have known each other since we were 10yo. I'm very happy that she is here, I'm happy for her. I know what she went through, it was difficult. She got through that and that's the most important thing," Swiatek said of Chwalinska.

Swiatek happy Chwalinska overcame depression

Just before the start of Wimbledon, Chwalinska recalled her battle with depression.

"In 2019 I started to feel bad," Chwalinska recalled. "First on the court, but after I also started to feel bad off the court, and it led me to depression. Something I enjoyed the most suddenly became a source of suffering.

I associated tennis with pressure, stress and crying. I was dealing with that until last year's Wimbledon, when I decided to take a break. I didn't know that I would come back, to be honest, because things were not fine.

There were dark thoughts. It was tough to even leave the house. I didn't have any desire for anything." Meanwhile, Swiatek has made a winning start to her Wimbledon campaign. On Tuesday, Swiatek saw off Croatian qualifier Jana Fett 6-0 6-3 to reach the Wimbledon second round.

Swiatek has now won her last 36 matches and set the new record for the most consecutive wins in the 21st century. Swiatek plays Lesley Kerkhove in the Wimbledon second round.
