Coach Patrick Mouratoglou says it is an absolute pleasure to be working with Simona Halep as he finds the Romanian as a very likable person. In April, Mouratoglou took to social media to announce he was becoming the new full-time coach of Halep.
Halep, who contemplated retirement last year and also had retirement thoughts in February, is past that stage and she is once again enjoying being out on the court. “Her and I are enjoying a lot what we are doing,” Mouratoglou said on Be In Sport, per Tennis Majors.
“We get on really well. Being on the court, waking up in the morning to work is a pleasure for both of us. As Mike Tyson mentions, no boxer is more dangerous than a happy boxer. Here we have a happy tennis player. That is, in a way, why she’s playing so well.
She’s a fabulous player. Working with her is an opportunity for me. She has a great personality, really worth being discovered. The more you know her, the more you love her."
Halep credits Mouratoglou for believing in her
The 2021 season was extremely challenging for Halep and she was thinking about calling it a career.
However, Halep did decide to return for 2022 but she started battling retirement thoughts again in February. Now, Halep is playing again with the fire in her eyes and she credits Mouratoglou for helping her return to that state.
“He trusted in myself that I still can be a good player,” Halep said of working with Mouratoglou. “He sent me somehow this confidence, and I started to believe in myself again that I have that chance to be a good player again”.
After Halep hired Mouratoglou, she underlined the motivation behind that decision was her goal of winning more Grand Slam titles. Unfortunately for Halep, she suffered a 6-3 6-3 loss to Elena Rybakina in the Wimbledon semifinal. Even though Halep didn't win Wimbledon, it was still a very positive campaign for her.
