Tennis: Top seed Angelique Kerber of Germany made her way into the second round of Citi Open WTA Tennis tournament in Washington with a straight sets victory over American qualifier Irina Falconi. 4th seed Alize Cornet and 6th seed Mona Barthel also won.
World no.9 Kerber faced world no.156 Irini Falconi, who is 147 ranks lower than her in the ranking. Kerber outclassed her opponent in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 to cruise into 2nd round. Another German Mona Barthel, who is seeded 6th in the event, faced world no.48 Stefanie Voegele of Switzerland.
Barthel broke her opponent twice in each set to win it 6-2, 6-2 in straight sets. 4th seed Alize Cornet of France faced former world no.12 Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium. Their head-to-head record was tied at 1-1, with Wickmayer winning the only meeting in hard court in 2009.
Cornet won it 6-1, 6-3 in straight sets to move into second round. In another match, Romania's Monica Niculesco defeated American wildcard Taylor Townsend 6-3, 6-0 in the first round.
