Simona Halep: I cannot actually think about the match very well because I'm lost

Former world No. 1 Simona Halep said she felt "lost" following her National Bank Open last-16 match against Jil Teichmann. On Thursday, Halep beat Teichmann 6-2 7-5 to progress into the quarterfinal in Toronto. Presumably, the windy playing conditions in Toronto were causing trouble for Halep.

"I cannot actually think about the match very well because I'm lost. I talked to [Jil] after the match and she said the same thing. It was impossible to play from one side. But what is important is that I fought for every ball and I could win the match," Halep told WTA insider after the match.

Halep beat Teichmann to set up a Cori Gauff match

15th-seeded Halep got off to a very strong start to her last-16 match, claiming back-to-back breaks to open an early 3-0 lead.

After losing her serve in back-to-back service games, Teichmann got one break back in the fourth game to cut the deficit to 3-1. But in the seventh game, Halep broke Teichmann to once again go up by a double break. In the eighth game, Teichmann had a break point but Halep saved it as the Romanian managed to serve out for the first set.

After winning the first set, Halep put the pressure on Teichmann's serve early in the second set but failed to get a break. Halep had break points in the first and third games of the second set but Teichmann saved to avoid going down by an early break.

The first break of the second set was seen in the 11th game, when Halep broke Teichmann to give herself a 6-5 lead and a chance to serve out for the match. In the 12th game, Teichmann had a break point but Halep saved as she managed to serve out for the match and escape with a two-set victory.

In the Toronto quarterfinal, Halep plays next Gauff. Going into the match, Halep owns a perfect 3-0 head-to-head versus Gauff.
