Simona Halep opens up on how Patrick Mouratoglou helped her rediscover flame for game

Simona Halep credits coach Patrick Mouratoglou for helping her rediscover her flame for the game. Halep had a very challenger 2021 season and she was contemplating retirement in 2021 and early 2022. In April, Halep announced Mouratoglou as her new full-time coach.

Now, two-time Grand Slam champion Halep is feeling great and determined to achieve more success. “The person next to us. Patrick. He brought it. And the vibe from the academy gave me the energy. To see all those kids fighting every day to touch the dream that they have," Halep said in Toronto.

Halep: The fire is back

Halep could have walked away from tennis earlier this year and she would have been remembered as a great and successful player. “The fire is back. It's a good sign if I do that. Like, yeah, it looks like I fight.

I can say it helps me sometimes. I don't know always if it's good or not. But it helps me. Yeah, it doesn't look good. But it's a tough subject,” Halep added. Before Mouratoglou started working with Halep, he was Serena Williams' coach for quite some time.

Mouratoglou certainly knows how to approach a player and to put him in the best position to succeed. Mouratoglou and Halep clicked from Day 1 as the French coach absolutely loves working with the Romanian. “Her and I are enjoying a lot what we are doing,” Mouratoglou said in July.

“We get on really well. Being on the court, waking up in the morning to work is a pleasure for both of us. As Mike Tyson mentions, no boxer is more dangerous than a happy boxer. Here we have a happy tennis player. That is, in a way, why she’s playing so well.

She’s a fabulous player. Working with her is an opportunity for me. She has a great personality, really worth being discovered. The more you know her, the more you love her."
