Cori Gauff, 18, wins Toronto doubles title, becomes new doubles world No. 1

Cori Gauff, 18, has won the National Bank Open doubles title with fellow American Jessica Pegula and she is the new doubles world No. 1. In the National Bank Open doubles final in Toronto, Gauff and Pegula defeated Nicole Melichar-Martinez and Ellen Perez 6-4 6-7 (5) 10-5.

Gauff, the sixth-ranked doubles player in the world, will be the new top-ranked doubles player when the WTA rankings list gets updated on Monday morning. Gauff has had a great season in doubles as she and Pegula now have won two titles in 2022.

In 2022, Gauff has four doubles finals and two titles. Gauff and Pegula were French Open doubles finalists, but unfortunately fell just short of winning the title there. In the French Open final, Gauff and Pegula were up by a set before Caroline Garcia and Kristina Mladenovic stormed back to win in three sets.

Gauff maybe didn't win her first Grand Slam doubles title at the French Open, but earned a large number of points. Now, Gauff is the new top-ranked player in the doubles competition.

Gauff, Pegula win a three-set Toronto final

Gauff and Pegula got off to a very slow start as Melichar-Martinez and Perez claimed back-to-back breaks to open a 3-0 lead.

Down by a double-break early on, Gauff and Pegula started playing much better as they broke Melichar-Martinez and Perez three times to overturn the deficit and win the opener. In the 10th game of the second set, Gauff and Pegula missed out on three match point on Melichar-Martinez and Perez's serve.

Two games later, Gauff and Pegula missed out on two more match points. After not realizing five match points, Gauff and Pegula paid the price as Melichar-Martinez and Perez won the second set tie-break to send the match into a decider.

Fortunately for Gauff and Pegula, they were able to mentally recover from blowing five match points. In the match tie-break, Gauff and Pegula stepped up as they had a 6-5 lead before winning the next four points to finish off the final in style. It has been a great season for Gauff, who also reached her maiden Grand Slam singles final at the French Open.
