Germany´s Mona Barthel and Angelique Kerber win in Cincinnati

Tennis: Germany's Angelique Kerber and Mona Barthel advanced into the Pre-Quarterfinals of the Western and Southern Open WTA Tennis Championship in Cincinnati after beating their opponents. 9th seed Angelique Kerber faced Russia's Alisa Kleybanova.

Kerber had beaten Kleybanova in 3 sets in their only previous meeting 5 years ago. Kleybanova has gone down to world no.584 rank now and Kerber won the first set 7-6 in tie-break against her. Second set was one-sided as Kerber won it 6-2 to book her place in the 3rd round.

23-year-old Barthel was up against 16th seed Maria Kirilenko of Russia. World no. 32 was broken twice by her world no.16 opponent but she broke her three times and took the first set 6-4. Story was pretty much the same in the second set too as Kirilenko again broke Barthel two times but was again broken three times as Barthel won the second set 6-4 and set up a last 16 clash with world no.1 Serena Williams.
