Iga Swiatek out of BJK Cup Finals, criticizes WTA, ITF

World No. 1 Iga Swiatek has pulled out of the Billie Jean King Cup Finals and criticized the WTA and ITF for their "failure" to agree to make a "safe tennis calendar." Swiatek, who has won two Grand Slam titles this year, is set to compete at the WTA Finals, scheduled to take place in Fort Worth, Texas, between October 31-November 07.

The day after the final of the WTA Finals, the Billie Jean King Cup Finals will kick off in Glasgow. Swiatek, who helped Poland qualify for the Billie Jean King Cup Finals earlier this year, said her goal was to represent in Glasgow.

But she felt going straight from the United States to Glasgow, changing time zones and dealing with jet lag, could jeopardize her health.

Swiatek criticizes the WTA, ITF

"I was thinking it through a lot and discussing it with my team all over again, but I will not be able to play at the Billie Jean King Cup in Glasgow," Swiatek said in a message posted on her Instagram Story.

"And it makes me sad. I'm very sorry because I play for Poland whenever it is possible and I always give it my best. Playing in Poland this year was an honour and I hoped to do this again at the end of the season. I'm disappointed that tennis governing bodies did not come to an agreement on something as basic as the calendar of tournaments, giving us only one day to travel through the globe and changing the time zone.

This situation is not safe for our health and could cause injury. I'm going to talk to the WTA and ITF in order to change something. This situation is difficult not only for the players like me but mainly for the tennis fans that support our sport."

Meanwhile, Swiatek is the top-seeded player in Ostrava this week. After a first-round bye, Swiatek is set to kick off her campaign from the round-of-16 against Ajla Tomljanovic.
