Canadian tennis star Leylah Fernandez, 20, reveals Simona Halep treated her extremely nicely when they played doubles together at the 2019 National Bank Open in Toronto. In a video for the WTA Tour, Fernandez was reflecting on certain moments from her life and career.

In one picture, Fernandez was shown alongside Halep during their doubles match. In 2019 Toronto, a 16-year-old Fernandez got a singles main draw wildcard and also a chance to play doubles with two-time Grand Slam champion Halep.

Fernandez and Halep got off to a good start to their first-round match, but Nicole Melichar-Martinez and Kveta Peschke recovered from a set down to beat them in three sets. That year in Toronto, Fernandez was playing her first big tournament on the main level.

"I like this one. I had the opportunity to play with Simona, She was extremely nice, she was so nice, made it very easy for me to get used to the court, to the competition, and the WTA," Fernandez said in a video for the WTA Tour.

Fernandez has never played Halep on the WTA Tour

Unfortunately, Fernandez has yet to meet Halep in a singles match on the WTA Tour.

But there is a reason why they haven't played yet, at least why not this year. At the French Open, Fernandez sustained a foot injury that sustained her for three months. Just after Fernandez return to tennis, Halep underwent surgery and her 2022 season is over.

After the US Open, Halep announced that she had nose surgery to address her breathing difficulties. “Having problems with the breathing for many years already and becoming worse with the time, I decided to follow the advice of my doctors and do the needed surgery.

I couldn’t do it earlier because I never found the necessary three months for recovery. I did also the esthetic past, that I wanted to do for a long time as I did not like my nose at all. I know many of you can understand me," Halep announced in mid-September.

Fernandez and Halep are actually quite similar. Halep, who has been a star for a decade now, is often described as a very nice and kind person. Fernandez, the 2021 US Open runner-up, is also building a very nice reputation for herself as she is also considered among one of the nicest players in the game.
