US Open - Svetlana Kuznetsova and Alexandra Dulgheru turn back the clock with first round wins

Tennis - There was a welcome return to form for two players used to greener pastures in the game on Tuesday. Former world no. 1 and 2004 US Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova The Russian, seeded no. 27 this year, defeated American Mallory Burdette in straight sets 6-3, 7-5.

Kuznetsova is now 28-15 on the circuit this year. This was her first main draw tour win since the French Open. Also on Tuesday, former top 30 player Alexandra Dulgheru defeated 35th ranked American Varvara Lepchenko in a three hour baseline slugfest 6-7, 6-2, 7-6.

Dulgheru peaked at no. 26 in April 2011 in the rankings but is currently ranked only a lowly 214. Dulgheru commented after her win, "She’s a very good player, and she’s an American so she had the crowd’s support, but I felt the crowd supported me, too."
