World No 4 Caroline Garcia described winning the WTA Finals as her "greatest achievement" but noted that her next goal is to become a Grand Slam champion as she believes she "can achieve greater things." After struggling with her game for several years, Garcia rediscovered her best tennis in the second part of the 2022 season.
At the WTA Finals, Garcia put up an impressive run as she defeated Aryna Sabalenka in the final to lift her first title at the prestigious season-ending tournament. Following her WTA Finals victory, Garcia finished the 2022 season enjoying a career-high ranking of No 4 in the world.
In 2023, 29-year-old Osaka has a clear goal he wants to accomplish - to win a Grand Slam. This past September, Garcia made her first Grand Slam semifinal at the US Open before losing to Ons Jabeur.
Garcia on Eurosport's Players' Voice: Winning a Major is my next goal
"Is it a relief for me? I don't know.
Yes and no. Maybe that takes a little weight off me. But at the same time, it makes the dream and the goal of winning a Grand Slam even more concrete because it makes you want to go for much more. That's sport; that's tennis. Once you have accomplished something, you always want to go for more.
Trying to go for the biggest titles is what fuels my motivation. It's the main reason why I'm training every day. Sure, the Masters is very important, it shows me what I'm capable of, but I think my game can still improve. I feel I'm able to achieve greater things.
After reaching the semis at the US Open and then winning the WTA Finals, winning a Grand Slam becomes a concrete dream, a tangible one, even if there is still a long way to go," Garcia wrote in her piece for Eurosport's Players' Voice.
In January, Garcia will be making her 12th Australian Open appearance. Garcia hasn't had much success at Melbourne Park throughout her career as she has just once made the round-of-16 at the tournament. It remains to be seen if Garcia can become a Grand Slam champion in Melbourne.
