Iga Swiatek reveals doubts she had after replacing Ashleigh Barty at No 1 spot

Iga Swiatek revealed she had certain doubts after replacing Ashleigh Barty at the top spot. Barty, a three-time Grand Slam champion, announced a shock retirement from tennis at the age of 25 in March. At the time of her retirement, Barty was the top-ranked player in the world and she was fresh off an Australian Open triumph.

After Barty retired, she requested her name to be removed from the WTA rankings list as Swiatek replaced the Australian at the top spot. In the rest of 2022, Swiatek enjoyed lots of success, most notably winning two Grand Slams.

Swiatek on Barty: She set the bar high

"At first I felt like I wasn't sure if this is kind of my place to be. Ash, she seemed like a huge role model for everybody in terms of her behaviour on court but also off court so I felt like she really set the bar pretty high.

I need to show it to people but also show it to myself that I'm in the right place. I'm super proud of myself. I feel a huge satisfaction, because I have been working my whole life to get to this point. I didn't really think it's possible for me.

Even right now I feel like there is a lot I can change and improve," Swiatek said, as quoted on Eurosport. In a recent interview, Swiatek admitted that she was trying to figure out how to beat Barty before the Australian announced a shock retirement.

On the clay courts of Rome in 2021, Barty defeated Swiatek. In the 2022 Adelaide International semifinal, Barty again beat Swiatek. But now that Barty is retired, Swiatek has established herself as the face of women's tennis.

On the court, Swiatek is making great results. Off the court, Swiatek is a perfect role model to kids around the world. Overall, Swiatek is doing all the right things.
