German tennis legend Anke Huber reveals Angelique Kerber is absolutely eyeing to make a tennis comeback after pregnancy. Last August, three-time Grand Slam champion Kerber announced she was expecting her first child. In late February, 35-year-old Kerber announced that a baby girl named Liana was born.
Huber, a former world No 4, is now the sports director at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart. Kerber is a two-time champion in Stuttgart and the tournament organizers are hoping to have her at the tournament next year.
Huber: Kerber definitely wants to come back
"We wrote to each other once or twice after the birth of her child. She definitely wants to come back, you can hear that from all sides. If she really wants that, I don't see anything that speaks against it.
A few other players have already shown that it's possible: Maria, Azarenka or Clijsters, for example, and Svitolina has also played again. In the future, more and more players with children will be on the tour and I think it's nice that it's like that.
In Stuttgart we would definitely welcome Angie again with open arms," Huber told Eurosport.de. Huber, 48, is still very much associated with German tennis. Andrea Petkovic, who retired after the 2022 US Open, is now working with Huber on helping Germany raise the next generation of tennis stars.
According to Huber, the future of German tennis is very bright. "I see a positive development. There are some young players who have great potential. The DTB is working hard to make things look better again in the future. Andrea Petkovic has got involved and is helping young players.
But the way up the tour is not easy. The players who are between 200 and 300 in the world rankings are noticing that," Huber said. In the last decade, Kerber has been by far the most successful German female tennis player.
