Jessica Pegula acknowledges Emma Raducanu is about to enter a not-so-fun period but also advised the 20-year-old to "embrace the suckiness of it" and find ways to overcome the challenge of undergoing multiple surgeries. Raducanu, 20, announced last week that she was undergoing surgeries on both hands and her left ankle.
Pegula, 29, had knee surgery in 2014 and she also had to surgically repair a hip injury in 2017. Just like Raducanu, Pegula was very young when she went under the knife. Raducanu announced she will miss the French Open and Wimbledon but some fear the 20-year-old might end up sidelined for the remainder of the 2023 season.
Pegula on the Raducanu case
“I would say definitely for me it was a time I definitely learned a lot about myself. If you want to keep playing, how hard do you want to come back, stuff like that. Also spending days in rehab for months on end, which she’s going to have a lot of, it’s really tough mentally.
I think you just have to kind of embrace the suckiness of it because it’s not fun. Anyone that tries to tell you it’s fun, it’s not. You just have to kind of embrace the aspect of I’m going to grind this out.
It’s not going to be the most fun, but I have to find ways to get through it and appreciate that I’m able to go through this rehab and find other ways to get better," Pegula said, via Tennis365. For over a year, Raducanu was constantly battling injuries and physical setbacks.
Initially, Raducanu didn't want to go under the knife, instead trying to manage her injuries. But it evidently wasn't working for Raducanu, who was still feeling pain and being constantly hampered by the injuries. In the end, Raducanu deciding to undergo surgeries was somewhat expected to happen at some point.
