Laura Robson defends Emma Raducanu, other British girls amid criticism

Laura Robson has come to the defense of Emma Raducanu and other British girls following the criticism British women's tennis has been receiving lately. After Raducanu exited the top-100, British women's tennis was left without a single top-100 player.

Also, there is no any British female players in a Grand Slam main draw for the first time since the 2009 US Open. Raducanu made the French Open main draw cut but was forced to skip the tournament after undergoing multiple surgeries.

In recent days and weeks, criticism has been strong on British tennis in the local media. “I think honestly, it's pretty unlucky," Robson told Eurosport.

Jodie Burrage, 24, recently won an ITF event title and reached a career-high ranking of No 106 in the world but then suffered an unfortunate elbow injury and was forced to miss the French Open.

“Really, really frustrating with the timing of her injury that she picked up because she was playing her best tennis. She was really high on confidence and is now having to take a couple of weeks off with an elbow issue," Robson said.

Going forward, Robson is not concerned about the future of British tennis as she believes there are definitely girls capable of being top-100 and making notable results. “I don't think there's anything to worry about in women's British tennis.

It could just as easily change in the next couple of months because Katie Swan, Katie Boulter, Harriet Dart, Jody and then Heather Watson, of course, they've all been good enough in the past and absolutely can be good enough again.

I just named four or five people who are very capable of being in the top 100. Very capable," Robson said. After winning the 2021 US Open, Raducanu entered the top-100 for the first time in her career. This month, Raducanu exited the top-100. Raducanu is currently recovering from multiple surgeries and she will be out at least through the entire grass season.
