Bianca Andreescu revealed she started asking herself "why the f--- can't I close this out" while serving out for the match against Victoria Azarenka. In a match that highlighted the French Open first-round action, 2019 US Open champion Andreescu defeated two-time Grand Slam champion Azarenka 2-6 6-3 6-4.
Serving out for the match in the 10th game of the third set, Andreescu missed out on three consecutive match points before also failing to realize her fourth match point. Fortunately for Andreescu, she was able to stay calm as the Canadian earned and converted her fifth match point to complete a three-set win.
"Why the F can't I close this out right now? Does God really want me to go through another 7-6'er? I don't think I have a good 7-6 record this year, so I was hoping not to go there. But I was just trying to stay as calm as possible because I was really hyped up at that time because I was one point away from winning the match.
So I really had to calm myself down because I felt like I was too excited on the three that I lost. Obviously, she played well," Andreescu said, via Sportskeeda.
Andreescu starts her French Open run with a strong win over Azarenka
After beating Azarenka, former world No 4 Andreescu opened up about her desire to return to her 2019 level.
In 2019, Andreescu won a Grand Slam and two WTA 1000 titles. Since then, 22-year-old Andreescu hasn't won any titles. "I mean, in Miami I felt like I was pretty good with that in that sense. I guess, yeah, just over the past few weeks I had a lot of bad days and a lot of negative thoughts crept in.
I mean, this match definitely gives me confidence in that sense. Yeah, I want to go back to how hungry I was in 2019 more than ever," Andreescu said. In her next match, Andreescu plays Emma Navarro. It remains to be seen if Andreescu can make a strong French Open run.
