Aryna Sabalenka shares update on UK visa situation, Wimbledon participation

World No 2 Aryna Sabalenka has received her UK visa as the Belarusian tennis star is officially set to return to Wimbledon this summer. In mid-May, Sabalenka revealed that she was yet to receive a UK visa. On Thursday, Sabalenka suffered a shock French Open semifinal defeat to Karolina Muchova as the Czech stunningly recovered from a 2-5 third-set deficit to beat the Belarusian 7-6 (5) 6-7 (5) 7-5.

Sabalenka's French Open didn't end in the preferred way but the Belarusian still had some good news to share. “I received the visa. I can celebrate. I’ll be in London. I can’t wait to go back. I missed it so much last year," Sabalenka said, via The Tennis Letter.

Last year, Wimbledon became the first and only tournament to impose player bans on Russian and Belarusian players due to the war in Ukraine.

Earlier this year, Sabalenka became a Grand Slam champion at the Australian Open. After lifting her first Grand Slam title at Melbourne Park, Sabalenka admitted that being denied participation at Wimbledon six months earlier was "a tough moment for me." "I mean, missing the Wimbledon was really tough for me.

It was tough moment for me. It's not about Wimbledon right now. It's just about the hard work I've done. I think everyone still knows that I'm Belarusian player. That's it. It's tough to explain what I'm feeling right now. I'm just super happy and proud.

I don't know how to explain. Just the best day of my life right now. I will have some good pizza and a lot of sweets. Maybe a little bit of champagne," Sabalenka said after winning the Australian Open. Sabalenka, 25, has played at Wimbledon four times so far in her career. Sabalenka achieved her best Wimbledon result in 2021, when she made the semifinal before losing to Karolina Pliskova.
