Elena Rybakina is set to enter the top-3 for the first time in her career despite a very unfortunate end to her French Open campaign. After winning a WTA 1000 event in Rome, Rybakina broke into the top-5 for the first time in her career and achieved a career-high ranking of No 4 in the world.

On Monday, Rybakina will make it past Jessica Pegula, who entered the French Open as the third-ranked player in the world. Rybakina, who reached the French Open third round last year, also made the third round at Roland Garros this year before a viral illness forced her to pull out of the tournament.

On the other side, Pegula - who made the French Open quarterfinal last year - was beaten in the third round and this year and dropped points.

Rybakina set for a new career-high after the French Open

Rybakina was considered among the top favorites for the French Open title before a viral illness ended her run.

Just before her third-round match against Sara Sorribes Tormo, Rybakina announced a sudden withdrawal. "I saw the doctor and they said that actually it's all a virus here in Paris. I guess with my allergy, immune system just went down and I picked up something.

As I said, I was not sleeping well for two days. I had fever, headache. I think you can hear [my voice] also. So, yeah, it's difficult to perform and obviously to run and even breathe. So I think that was the only right decision I could make," Rybakina said in a statement.

Also, Rybakina admitted that she was upset but noted that playing while being far from being 100 percent didn't make sense. "Of course I'm really upset not be able to play, but I guess that's life. There is a lot of ups and downs.

Today I just wanted to give 100 percent, and obviously I'm far from being 100 percent. Yeah, I was actually coming positive here, but as I said, you never know how you're gonna feel. Was unlucky for me. Yeah, I just try to recover and do my best to be prepared for the grass season already," Rybakina said. Rybakina will now turn her focus on the grass season.
