Iga Swiatek admitted in Montreal that she didn't feel that she really deserved to win a junior tournament in Quebec seven years ago. Swiatek, who turned 22 in May, won a junior tournament in the province of Quebec in 2016 after Olga Danilovic retired in the final.
This week, Swiatek returned to the Quebec region for this week's WTA 1000 event in Montreal. Following her 7-6 (6) 6-2 win over Karolina Pliskova in her Montreal opener, Swiatek recalled the time when she won a junior tournament in Quebec.
That year, Swiatek was down in both the semifinal and final but won after her opponents retired.
Swiatek on the time she 'undeservedly' won Quebec
"Well, it was a pretty weird win because I think I was losing in the semifinal, and my opponent retired.
And then in the final I was losing again, and my opponent retired as well. So I didn't feel like I deserved it. That's what happened, I think. I remember the final was against Olga Danilovic, and it was a stressful tournament because we were always competing in juniors.
So I kind of wanted to prove myself, but I think it was, like, one of the first important tournaments outside of Europe. So there was a lot of pressure. I remember, yeah, I won it, but I didn't feel like I should be. So mixed emotions, but a great experience, yeah," Swiatek said, via Sportskeeda.
The National Bank Open is played one year in Montreal and the other in Toronto. After playing in Toronto twice as a pro, Swiatek made her Montreal debut this week. In her previous two National Bank Open appearances in Toronto, Swiatek didn't enjoy much success as both times she was beaten in the round-of-16. It remains to be seen if Montreal will be more lucky for Swiatek.
