Maria Sakkari, 28, expressed her deepest gratitude to everyone who has reached out to her following her emotional confession at the US Open. Sakkari, ranked at No 8 in the world, suffered a shock US Open first-round loss against Rebeka Masarova on Monday.
After the match, Sakkari revealed lately she has been "suffering on the court" and hinted she may take a break from tennis. On Wednesday, Sakkari took to Instagram to reveal how the tennis community and fans reacted to her revelation.
"I really have no words to describe the love and support I’ve received the last 48h. Sometimes you have to hit rock bottom to realise simple things in life. I just want to say thank you to each one of you for inspiring me to keep going and get back to enjoying myself.
Don’t forget to love yourself," Sakkari wrote on Instagram.
Sakkari opened up following her US Open exit
Prior to her US Open first-round match, Sakkari said her focus at the start of the tournament was just to finally win a Grand Slam match.
After picking up back-to-back Grand Slam first-round exits at the French Open and Wimbledon, Sakkari wanted to do better at the US Open. But after Sakkari lost to Masarova, the Greek became very emotional and in tears confessed that she has been going through a rough time lately. "I was very nervous, I don't know what I'm going to do, I really don't know, it's always the same.
Maybe I should take a break, I'm suffering on the court. I can't make a decision now, it's hard. I don't have a clear mind," Sakkari told Greek publication SDNA after her US Open exit.
While Sakkari has yet to confirm she won't be taking a break from tennis, her latest Instagram post is a strong indication that the Greek is heading toward continuing her season.
