Jelena Ostapenko was brutally honest after winning over Iga Swiatek in the US Open

Defending champion and world number one Iga Swiatek is out of the US Open. Jelena Ostapenko defeated the Polish woman 3-6, 6-3, 6-1. Their record is now 4-0 for Ostapenko. After the match the Latvian explained the reasons for her win.

"I think the main thing is she doesn’t really like to play big hitters. She likes to have some time. When I play fast, aggressive and powerful, she’s a little bit in trouble" Jelena Ostapenko said. "I always expect a tough battle against Iga.

I knew I had to play my game. I have to be aggressive because that's what she doesn't really like and I was just fighting until the very last point" Ostapenko added. Iga Swiatek was disappointed by her performance at hardcourt majors this year.

She lost in the Australian Open in the fourth round as well. "I don't really know what happened with my game. I felt no control suddenly. I just have to watch and see because, yeah, I didn't really know why I started making so many mistakes" Swiatek said.

Ostapenko admitted before the match that it would be easier for her to be more lax. Why? Because Swiatek was the favorite of this game. "I had nothing to lose today.

I knew it was going to be a tough match. Even the first set I couldn't find my game that way, but I was fighting and trying to find my game and be aggressive" Ostapenko said. In the quarterfinals of the US Open Jelena Ostapenko will face Coco Gauff, whom she won this year in the fourth round of the Australian Open.

"She's a great young player, I played against her this year in Australia. It was a tough match. Of course, it's going to be another tough match. I don't expect any easy matches here at the Grand Slams. So I'm ready for another battle" Ostapenko added.

After the match Swiatek - Ostapenko it is already known that Aryna Sabalenka will be the new leader of the WTA ranking from next Monday. The US Open tournament will have also a new champion.
