United States President Joe Biden congratulated Coco Gauff on winning the US Open and "making America proud." On Saturday, 19-year-old Gauff lifted her first Grand Slam title after beating Aryna Sabalenka 2-6 6-3 6-2 in the US Open final.

For the first time since 2017, an American female tennis player won the US Open. "Congrats to U.S. Open Champion @CocoGauff. You electrified Arthur Ashe stadium and the entire nation – the first of more to come and proof that anything is possible if you never give up and always believe.

You’ve made America so proud,” President Biden wrote on X.

Gauff, who will be turning 20 in March, burst onto the scene in 2019 when she as a 15-year-old girl beat Venus Williams and made the Wimbledon round-of-16.

At just 19 years old, Gauff has already accomplished so much in tennis. “I feel like this is a big achievement, but honestly, I feel like I've been so used to this since I was basically 15 years old in high school, doing online school, just used to it.

I mean, I'm sure it might be a much bigger scale now because of this achievement, but I'm ready. I mean, I embrace it. I know how to keep my peace but also embrace all of this around me,” Gauff said. At the start of the 2023 season, Gauff made it clear that her intention was to win a Grand Slam and reach the world No 1 ranking this year.

Gauff is now a Grand Slam champion and she is also enjoying a career-high ranking of No 3 in the world. “I think the pressure has been taken off a little bit, and I still am hungry for more. But yeah, I'm just going to enjoy this and try not to look into the future,” Gauff said.
