Maria Sharapova reveals she is "always rooting for Jannik Sinner" because she admires the Italian's "humble approach to tennis." Sinner, 22, is widely considered one of the nicest players on the Tour. Sharapova, who retired from pro tennis after the 2020 Australian Open, worked with coach Riccardo Piatti before retiring.

Piatti then worked with Sinner - their partnership lasted until 2022 February. "You know, the last coach of my career coached Sinner for several years, so I got to play with him a few times. So, you know, I'm always rooting for him.

I just like his humble approach to the sport. I love seeing the younger generation. There's an aura about the men's game, it's very evident. They have different styles of play, different personalities, from different parts of the world, and it's just fun to see these rivalries come together.

I think the men's game is in a good state," Sharapova said on The Rennae Stubbs Tennis Podcast.

Just before Sharapova's retirement, Sinner had a chance to practice with the former five-time Grand Slam champion.

Last year, Sinner spoke very highly of Sharapova and revealed how it felt to be on the same court with the Russian tennis legend. "Of course, the mentality. She had an incredible mindset. I was lucky to get to know her a little bit more.

We practiced also a couple of times together on the court. She is a very special person, I think. And what she has done for the sport is also great. Yeah, I think I was just lucky to get to know her," Sinner said of Sharapova in 2022.

While Sharapova is now focused on some other things in life, Sinner is hoping to one day become a Grand Slam champion and also reach the world No 1 ranking.
