Angelique Kerber praised Coco Gauff by saying she has been "particularly impressed" by the American but also revealed that she was a bit surprised by the 19-year-old's US Open win. Kerber, a former world No 1, took a break from tennis after 2022 Wimbledon to focus on her pregnancy.

Kerber, who gave birth earlier this year and missed the entire 2023 season, still followed regularly women's tennis. During the North American hard court swing, Gauff lifted her first WTA 1000 title in Cincinnati before also becoming a Grand Slam champion at the US Open. ‟Of course, I’ve always kept up to date.

Alongside players at the very top like Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka, Coco Gauff has particularly impressed me. She’s played great tournaments time and time again for a while now, but the fact she’s now already won the US Open at the age of only 19 is however a little bit of a surprise," Kerber told Porsche-Tennis.

Meanwhile, Kerber is set to return to tennis at the start of the 2024 season. Ahead of her comeback, Kerber reunited with her former coach Torben Beltz. With coach Beltz, Kerber achieved some of her biggest results.

Kerber wants to make a successful return and she believes coach Beltz can help her in that goal. ‟It gives me a big feeling of security and a certain inner peace of mind when I know there are people at my side that I can trust.

It’s very important for me personally. For what is an extremely long preparation. I wanted a team around me that I’ve known for a long time and that I know will understand the new challenges that I’m facing.

It’s not only the practicing. The whole daily routine has to be planned a little differently. I need people’s understanding and the full support of people I can count on all the time," Kerber explained.
