Aryna Sabalenka is calling on the WTA to allow players to have a bigger voice in important decision-making. The WTA and its CEO Steve Simon drew lots of criticism over the decision to bring this year's WTA Finals to Cancun.
When the participants arrived in Cancun, the stadium construction was still ongoing. Once the players were able to finally hit the court, the majority of them complained that the court conditions were poor. Then, Cancun's tricky conditions during this part of the year were another problem as several matches were suspended and some were even pushed to another day.
"That’s the problem. They just announced it, and that’s it. Like some of the players just saw a tweet and were like ‘Okay, we’re playing in Cancun.’ It’s just like they made the decision and that’s it.
That’s the problem. That they’re not asking all the players where they would like to play. I would like to be involved in these kind of decisions. I have to play here. Having this ability to control these decisions would be really helpful," Sabalenka said.

The situation in Cancun led to some even calling for WTA CEO Simon to step down from his position. Martina Navratilova, one of the greatest players in tennis history, thinks it's time for a new leadership - preferably to have a woman at the charge. “Maybe it’s time for new leadership.
But for me personally, this being a woman’s association and being involved for such a long time from the beginning, and we’ve only had three women at the head of it. I think it’s time. Hopefully, when we get a new leader, it’s a woman.
There’s plenty of them that are qualified for the job. It’s gonna be hard for Steve to stay in the job. Everything is pointing the other way," Navratilova said. It remains to be seen what the moves the WTA will make after what happened at this year's WTA Finals.
