Elina Svitolina thinks it was "terrible" for tennis to have the 2023 WTA Finals staged in such conditions. When the players arrived in Cancun, the court was still not ready as there were still workers working on the stadium construction.

Just a day before the start of the WTA Finals, the participants were able to have their first on the court. After experiencing the court, pretty much all players started complaining about "poor" court conditions. But the court conditions weren't the only issue in Cancun as the wind and rain caused by very tricky conditions were also having a negative impact on play. "I saw the court was not ready, I don’t know why the WTA wanted to host it in Cancun.

It’s a shame for the best eight players in the world to be playing in these conditions, it’s terrible for our sport to be honest," Svitolina told The Daily Mail.

After several players very openly complained about the conditions in Cancun, WTA CEO Steve Simon reached out the players via a letter.

The letter was obtained and shared by Sports Illustrated's Jon Wertheim on X. "Many thanks to those of you who were able to join our meeting here in Cancun. We do welcome your engagement and hope that it will continue. As we were not able to get into some of the areas, we felt it important to share with you the following: First and foremost, it is clear that you are not happy with the decision to be here in Cancun.

I understand that and you have been heard. As I have reflected to you, this is not where we expected to be and the decision for this location was based upon a number of complicated factors. It is not a perfect event, we understand the conditions are a challenge and the WTA will of course accepts responsibility for that.

I am appreciative that you have reflected in the media your recognition of the significant support from Cancun and all of the people that are working so hard to put on this event. I wish you the best of luck for remainder of the event and, as always, we are here to provide you any support and assistance that we can as you all deserve the best," WTA CEO Simon said in his letter to the players.
