Emma Raducanu has seemingly confirmed her intention to compete at the 2024 Australian Open as the British tennis star has entered the tournament using a protected ranking. Raducanu, a former world No 10, withdrew from the Madrid Open in late April before undergoing multiple surgeries in early May.

When Raducanu returns, she will have a protected ranking of No 103 in the world. Currently, that's not enough for Raducanu to make the Australian Open main draw directly. As it stands now, Raducanu will need either a main draw wildcard from the tournament organizers or a couple of players to withdraw from the tournament so she can make the Australian Open main draw directly.

Raducanu just barely managed to play at this year's Australian Open

In 2022, Raducanu made her Australian Open debut. In her first appearance at Melbourne Park, Raducanu defeated Sloane Stephens before surprisingly losing to Danka Kovinic in the second round.

Earlier this year, Raducanu competed at Melbourne Park again but her Australian Open appearance was up in the air until the last moments. Raducanu started the 2023 season in Auckland, where she badly rolled her ankle during a round-of-16 match against Viktoria Hruncakova.

That left Raducanu dealing with an ankle injury just 10 days before the start of the Australian Open. Raducanu's Australian Open appearance was in major jeopardy but the Briton ultimately managed to recover enough to be able to play.

In the Australian Open first round, Raducanu made a positive start as she defeated Tamara Korpatsch 6-3 6-2. By beating Korpatsch, Raducanu set up a meeting against Coco Gauff. Raducanu competed well against Gauff but the third-ranked American ended up beating the Briton 6-3 7-6 (4).

After the loss to Gauff, Raducanu was drawing positives as she said that just managing to play at the Australian Open was a success. Now, it will be interesting to see if Raducanu plays the Australian Open qualifying or makes the main draw directly.
