Elena Rybakina admits reaching the world No 1 ranking is one of her main goals but also highlights that doing well in Grand Slams is always a priority. Rybakina, ranked at No 4 in the world, achieved a career-high ranking of No 3 after the French Open on June 12th.

After finishing as runner-up at the 2023 Australian Open, Rybakina broke into the top-10 for the first time in her career. Had points from her 2022 Wimbledon win counted, Rybakina would have broken back then into the top-10.

Currently, Rybakina has 6,365 ranking points, while world No 1 Iga Swiatek has 9,295 ranking points. “Of course, the main goal is to become the world No 1 one day, but the priority always is to do well in the Grand Slams.

So I think the goals are quite the same,” Rybakina told Gulf News.

Rybakina on reaching No 1: It is going to be tough

Swiatek, Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff are all ranked ahead of Rybakina. But 24-year-old Rybakina is also one of the best players in the game and she is also a Slam champion.

"Yes, it’s going to be tough. I want to improve physically because this part is always a bit weaker for me but on the court there is so much to improve that we never have the time implement what my coach is telling me,” Rybakina said.

Meanwhile, Rybakina lost to Swiatek at the World Tennis League in Abu Dhabi on Thursday. However, Rybakina was positive about the match. “Honestly, Iga brought so much energy and the match was really intense. It was difficult but an important one for me.

I am in good shape now,” Rybakina said. Meanwhile, Rybakina is starting her 2024 season in Brisbane and she will also play in Adelaide leading up to the Australian Open. In Australia, Rybakina will have a notable amount of points to defend since she was a finalist at Melbourne Park earlier this year.

It will be interesting to see if Rybakina can have another big Australian swing and get closer to getting No 1 in early 2024.
