Coco Gauff is set to kick off her Auckland title defense as the top-ranked American female tennis player has received a pretty favorable draw on paper.

Gauff, the top-seeded player in Auckland, will be meeting world No. 98 Claire Liu in the first round. Against Liu, Gauff has a 1-0 head-to-head, having beaten the world No. 98 in straight sets when they met in 2022 Indian Wells. Going into their Auckland match, Gauff is the absolute favorite to end on the winning side again.

In the Auckland round-of-16, Gauff will likely be playing against Anna Blinkova, who is ranked at No. 49 in the world. If there are no any major surprises and Gauff reaches the quarterfinal, she would likely meet No. 8 seed Varvara Gracheva there. In the Auckland semifinal, Gauff is projected to meet No. 4 seed Emma Navarro.

The projected Auckland final sees Gauff taking on second-seeded Elina Svitolina. Caroline Wozniacki, a former world No. 1 who is unseeded, is also in the bottom half of the draw and she could also very easily make the Auckland final if she beats Svitolina in their first-round match.

Can Gauff win back-to-back Auckland titles?

Gauff, 19, is set to make her third Auckland appearance. In 2020, Gauff made the Auckland round-of-16 in her debut before losing to Laura Siegemund.

In 2023 January, Gauff returned to Auckland for her second appearance at the tournament. This time, Gauff had far more success as she ended up winning the title after clinching five straight-set wins. In the 2023 Auckland final, Gauff dismantled Rebeka Masarova 6-1 6-1.

Going into the 2024 Auckland edition, Gauff is undoubtedly the No. 1 favorite for the title. Svitolina and Wozniacki are also notable names to look out for but Gauff remains the top favorite for the Auckland title. It remains to be seen if Gauff can win back-to-back Auckland titles ahead of the Australian Open.
