The examination of the appeal presented by Simona Halep to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne has begun. Both parties have requested the exclusion of the media: the examination will take place behind closed doors and will have to examine the four-year suspension of the Romanian tennis player for doping.

Simona will be present at the hearing in Lausanne, without however having to testify in person before the final sentence. According to the first rumors coming from the first sources, we are moving towards confirmation of the disqualification, even if Simona still hopes to be able to reverse the situation.

ITIA had previously explained how it had accepted Halep's argument that she had taken a contaminated dietary supplement. However, ITIA then established that the concentration of roxadustat found in the positive sample could not be the result of the amount ingested by the player.

Halep on the border: will the disqualification be confirmed

Regarding Halep's biological passport, ITIA said previously how the court has no reason to doubt the strong unanimous opinion of the three independent experts, according to which probable doping is the explanation for the irregularities based on the analysis of 51 blood samples of the player.

The CAS had begun in this regard: "Since none of the parties involved have requested a public hearing, everything will take place behind closed doors starting from Wednesday at 9.30 am until Friday at approximately 3.30 pm." Simona Halep's ban began de facto on 7 October 2022, following a suspension received after some checks carried out at the end of the 2022 US Open, when the Romanian tested positive for a prohibited substance, roxadustat, a molecule that stimulates the production of red blood cells.

The former world number 1 was then recalled with a second accusation in the spring of 2023 for some irregularities in her biological passport. Both infringements were confirmed by the court, sitting in London at the end of June 2023.

Halep has always denied the accusations made against her. And it should be remembered that she was held back for months, before the disqualification was confirmed. An absurd situation for the former Roland Garros and Wimbledon champion.

With many points to clarify. If she has professed her innocence for so long, she must be certain that she has done nothing wrong.
