World No. 1 Iga Swiatek has made a very expected decision as the Polish tennis superstar won't be kicking off her grass season at next week's WTA 500 tournament in Berlin.

In the last two months, Swiatek played lots of tennis as she appeared in four tournaments during the clay season and posted a 21-1 record. After winning Madrid and Rome - which took place across 25 days - Swiatek also successfully defended her French Open title and is now a four-time champion at Roland Garros.

Since the clay season was extremely mentally and physically demanding for Swiatek, the general belief was that there was no way the Pole would start her grass season just seven days later in Berlin. And today, the new five-time Grand Slam champion announced she was out of Berlin due to "overall physical and mental fatigue."

"Due to overall physical and mental fatigue after an intense 9 weeks, unfortunately I do need to withdraw from the tournament in Berlin in order to rest and recover," Swiatek said in a statement.

In 2022, Swiatek was also signed up to play in Berlin but pulled out before the tournament started due to a shoulder issue. Unfortunately for Swiatek and the Berlin organizers, the Pole won't be making her Berlin debut this year either.

What could be Swiatek's next option before Wimbledon?

Last year, Swiatek also didn't play in the first week of the grass season but then played in Bad Homburg the week before Wimbledon. And in her Bad Homburg debut, Swiatek reached the semifinal before she pulled out of the tournament due to feeling unwell before the match.

Since Bad Homburg and Eastbourne are two grass tournaments taking place the week before Wimbledon, it wouldn't be surprising if Swiatek asked for a wildcard into one of those two tournaments.

However, there is also a chance that Swiatek simply decides not to play any tournaments leading up to Wimbledon and that way give herself a chance of entering The Championships fresher.
