World No. 8 Zheng Qinwen made a good start to the grass season by beating Naomi Osaka for the second time in a row but afterward had only positive words about the Japanese four-time Grand Slam champion.

After earning a two-set win over Osaka in the Rome round-of-16 a month ago, Zheng defeated Osaka 6-4 3-6 6-3 on the grass courts of Berlin to earn her first grass win since 2022.

21-year-old Zheng, who made her first Grand Slam final at this year's Australian Open and secured a top-10 ranking for the first time in her career, is currently regarded as one of the best players in the game. But she has nothing but deep respect for 26-year-old Osaka, who won four Grand Slams and reached the world No. 1 ranking very early in her career.

“Naomi Osaka is always one of the greatest players, she has a strong serve, she hits hard. It’s never easy to play against her," Zheng said of Osaka in her on-court interview.

Zheng on beating Osaka

After concluding her 2022 grass season with a loss in the Wimbledon third round, Zheng last year picked up first-round exits in Berlin, Eastbourne and Wimbledon.

Against Osaka in her 2024 grass season opener, Zheng claimed just two breaks during the match - one in the first set and the second in the third set - but those two breaks were enough for the 21-year-old to beat the former world No. 1.

Also, it should be noted that Zheng had a huge serving performance, firing 23 aces and winning 88 percent of her first serve points.

"I've played against her already on all different surfaces, hard, clay, and now grass court. It's a tough opponent in the first round. I'm happy that I gave my best today and to get my first win at this tournament in three years. The last two years when I came on grass, I was a little bit lost," Zheng said.

Zheng plays Katerina Siniakova next in Berlin.
