Tennis - Simona Halep won 6 WTA titles in 2013, the second most by any player on the tour after Serena Williams. Having ended the season as world no. 11, Halep seemed set to break into the top 10. But the Romanian has not had a good start to the 2014 season as she crashed out in the first round of the Apia International in Sydney.
Halep was knocked out by powerfu 18 year old Madison Keys on Sunday in straight sets 6-1, 6-4. Halep was completely outclassed in the match, except for a brief period in the second set when she ralled from 0-5 to 4-5 before Keys closed it out for the second biggest win of her career.
Halep commented after her loss, "I'm happy to be back on the court after two months of off-season. Last year was a long season for me, so I relaxed a little bit before starting to train again in the off-season, and I practiced two hours a day to get ready for the new year and I'm happy to start the year here in Sydney.
I just want to keep enjoying myself on the court, just like I did last year. My objective is to stay Top 20 this year and play well at the Grand Slam events." Keys next meets another youngster - 20 year old Croatian Ajla Tomljanovic who beat former world no.
5 Daniela Hantuchova, 64 75 - in the second round. Also moving on was Sara Errani, who beat best friend and doubles partner Roberta Vinci in straight sets. .
