Camila Giorgi sure is no new name in the WTA circuit. The 22-year-old has been in the spotlight more than once already. Last year she beat Caroline Wozniakci to reach the fourth round at the US Open, few weeks ago she also stunned defending champion Maria Sharapova in Indian Wells.
Thus, it is a little surprising to acknowledge that the quarter-final she reached on Wednesday at the BNP PARIBAS KATOWICE OPEN IN Poland, is the first of her career. In order to reach the plot for the first time, Camila had to face compatriot Roberta Vinci, defending champion in Katowice.
Despite the great fight the elder Italian put in the match, dragging the encounter to a third set when she was down 6-3 5-3, the match ended Giorgi's way. After 2 hours and 4 minutes the world No.69 could put her shy smile on her pretty face, winning the match with the final score of 6-3 6-7(7) 6-0.
During the match Camila was broken serve only once, compared to Vinci's 5 times in total. What used to be a main weapon in Roberta's game is giving her too much trouble this season. In her match against Giorgi, Vinci hit a total of 4 double faults, never managing to fire an ace.
Roberta only won 2 matches since the beginning of the season. The first victory came in Indian Wells, the second in Katowice. Here is the VIDEO of the last game of the match, including the Match Point: In her first ever WTA quarter-final Camila will meet former World No.11 Shahar Peer, who took out 8th seed Tsvetana Pironkova by 6-2 6-1.
