Tennis - Canadian Eugenie Bouchard, seeded no. 2, scored an impressive win over former world no. 20 Alisa Kleybanova in straight sets in the first round of the WTA Portugal Open in Oeiras. Bouchard scored a 6-4 6-1 win which also included an amazing winner hit by the Canadian when she fell down during the point.
Speaking after the win, the Australian Open semi-finalist commented, "It was a solid performance. I was pretty happy with how I played - I was aggressive but I was also able to neutralize her shots, because she can hit some pretty big balls.
I really tried to take advantage of my serve and just tried to put pressure on her whenever I could. I'm moving well on the clay and it's good to get another win." Bouchard will meet former top 30 player Yaroslava Shvedova for a place in the quarter-finals.
But it was not a good start to the European clay court season for Australian Samantha Stosur, who was beaten in the first round by Swiss Timea Bacsinszky. Stosur has been a former finalist at the French Open and likes playing on clay.
But her poor form and low confidence meant another early exit for her this week. Fourth seed Roberta Vinci and seventh seed Svetlana Kuznetsova were other winners on Tuesday.
