Ana Ivanovic beats Suarez Navarro to reach semifinals in Rome

Tennis: Former world no. 1 and 2008 French Open champion Ana Ivanovic defeated 13th seed Carla Suarez Navarro in 3 sets 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 to reach the semifinals of Italian Open in Rome. After ending her losing streak against Maria Sharapova in the previous round, Ivanovic was bidding to reach her first semifinals in Italian Open since 2010, when she had lost to Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez in last 4.

In only previous meeting between two players, Ivanovic had progressed last time when Suarez Navarro had retired in second set after losing the first set in Doha two years ago. There were lots of break of serve in the first set, as Ivanovic got 10 break points and converted 3 of them.

Suarez Navarro broke Ivanovic 2 times and it was enough as the set went 6-4 to Serbian. 25-year-old Spaniard fought back in the second set and won it 6-3 to force the match into a deciding set. Third set went close as both players fought their best and tried to outplay each other.

Ivanovic saved both of the break points she faced and converted 1 of the three break points she got to win the third set 6-4 and reach semifinals in 2 hours and 17 minutes. She will face the winner of world no. 1 Serena Williams and China's Shuai Zhang for a place in the final.

After the match, Ivanovic said, "I enjoy big moments like yesterday, but you have to put them behind you for the next one. I knew I had to be ready again for today because it was going to be a tough one. From the first moment I expected a lot of long rallies because Carla's a very good player on clay - but her shots suit me, so I can try and hit a lot of winners and come into the next to finish off the points."
