Monica Puig claims historic first WTA singles title for Puerto Rico

Tennis - One the same day that 20-year-old Canadian Eugenie Bouchard won her first career singles title, another 20-year-old, Puerto Rico's Monica Puig won her first career WTA title as well in the French city of Strasbourg.

Puig created history by becoming the first player from Puerto Rico to win a WTA singles title as she beat Spain's Sílvia Soler-Espinosa 6-4, 6-3. Commenting after her win, Puig said, "I woke up this morning and I felt it.

I felt I was going to do something amazing. It was one of those feelings where you just know it's going to happen, and I played some of the greatest tennis I've ever played. I was very focused and very poised on the court, and I'm very happy how things went.

I remember saying I wanted to win a WTA this year, so I'm going to have to find another goal now." The win will move her up to no. 41 in the rankings -a new career best for her.
