Carla Suarez Navarro brushes aside Tomljanovic to reach French Open Quarterfinals

Tennis: World No.15 Carla Suarez Navarro has brushed aside Ajla Tomljanovic of Croatia in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 to reach the Quarterfinals at the French Open for the second time.

The Spaniard, who has won the most matches on the WTA tour this season, had reached the French Open Quarterfinals 6 years back in 2008, coming as a qualifier. She had lost to Jelena Jankovic then, becoming the first qualifier to go that deep into the main draw at Roland Garros since 2001.

To do that again, she had to face the challenge of 21-year-old Croat, who was making her first appearance at the French Open, but had knocked out World No.3 Agnieszka Radwanska in the previous round. Suarez Navarro got an early break in the first set, which set her tone for the match.

She did not face a break point in the first set and broke her opponent twice to take the first set 6-3. In the second set, Tomljanovic broke the Spaniard early, but Suarez Navarro got the break back and broke the Croat once again to take the set 6-3 and moved into the Quarterfinals.

She will face Eugenie Bouchard next, who defeated Angelique Kerber in straight sets 6-1, 6-2. Suarez Navarro had won her first WTA title less than a month back in Portugal.
