Tennis - Eighth seeded Anna Schmiedlova was an early upset victim on the first day of the WTA Hong Kong Open, the first WTA event in the region in more than two decades. Schmiedlova was beaten by Dutchwoman Kiki Bertens 6-2, 7-6(5) to end a four match losing streak.
Bertens said she was happy with her performance and that she played quite a good match. Also in the first round on Monday, American Grace Min beat Israel's Julia Glushko 6-4, 6-2. Min will meet either top seed Sabine Lisicki or Monica Niculescu in the second round. Meanwhile, Australia's Jarmila Gajdosova and Chinese players Kai-Lin Zhang and Lin Zhu advanced to the main draw from the qualifying event.
