Tennis - Former US Open champion Samantha Stosur was upset at the Guangzhou International Women’s Open earlier today, bowing out in the opening round of the WTA International event. The Aussie, who is ranked at 20 in the world at the moment, came into the tournament as the top seed and hence her loss to wild card Yafan Wang was a huge surprise.
Wang, 20, is ranked at 251st place in the world at the moment and seemingly has a huge future ahead of her. What’s even more encouraging from Wang’s perspective is that she had the temperament to actually fight back from a set down to register that 2-6,6-2,6-2 win.
Interestingly, the WTA doesn’t seem to know too much about the youngster as of now as all that is listed on women’s tennis’ official website is that she is, indeed, a Chinese national. We, however, can tell you that she is a powerful player who is right-handed with a double-handed backhand.
The 20 year-old has won 6 titles on the ITF circuit and we’re sure you’ll be hearing a lot about her in the future. Her performance against Sam was of top quality with her serve giving her the foundation from which she built.
