Tennis – Rising Frenchwoman Alize Cornet continues to get better with every passing round here in Guangzhou, putting in one solid performance after another. While her battle against Shahar Peer of Israel on Wednesday was a tough examination, she seemed a lot more comfortable in the quarterfinal which was played earlier in the day.
Against Peer, Cornet was stretched to three sets, however, today she had it a lot easier as she finished the job in two. The Frenchwoman, who has two wins against Serena Williams this year, played a lot better than she did in the second round and the result was there for everyone to see as she registered a 7-6,6-1 win in an hour and 52 minutes against 171st ranked right-hander Su-Wei Hsieh.
The 24 year-old’s immaculate defence played its part in that win. Next up, the second seed will take on Timea Bacsinszky of Switzerland for a place in the final of the WTA International event. Cornet, 24, has had a superb year, but has only been able to win one title which she won in Katowice back in April.
In another quarterfinal match, unorthodox Romanian Monica Niculescu defeated Puerto Rican namesake Monica Puig in straight sets to confirm her place in the semi-finals.
