Tennis: Former World No.1 Victoria Azarenka, last year's Australian Open finalist Dominika Cibulkova and 2013 Wimbledon finalist Sabine Lisicki have been ousted from the Brisbane International WTA Tournament. The 2-time Australian Open champion and 2-time US Open finalist, Azarenka had not reached any WTA final since finishing runner-up to World No.1 Serena Williams here last year.
She had struggled throughout the year due to injuries, which made her rankings drop to World No.42. Azarenka was unseeded here and faced World No.23 Karolina Pliskova. They had met only once before, and Azarenka had won that meeting in straight sets easily.
This time Azarenka won the first set 6-4 and had a match point in the second set, but Pliskova made a come back and won the second set 7-6 (9-7) in tie-break. The Czech won the third set 6-4 to stun the 2009 Brisbane champion.
Third seed Angelique Kerber was the only seeded player in action on Monday, as she breezed past Caroline Garcia in straight sets 6-4, 6-3 to book her place in the second round.
