Maria Sharapova recovered from her tough second round encounter against Alexandra Panova two days ago by producing a commanding 6-1 6-1 win against 31st seed Zarina Diyas. From the start Sharapova took full control of proceedings as she broke her 21-year-old opponent in the first game of the match.
The second seeds serving in the first set were too strong for Diyas as Sharapova won 71% of her first service points and 80% of her second compared to Diyas who could only produce 43% and 38%. Sharapova also produced twice as many winners compared to unforced errors (14-7).
Diyas did at times display some impressive tennis during the match to remind the crowd and the WTA tour of how much of a talent the Kazakhstani player is. This talent helped her to break Sharapova in the first game of the second set to finally get the momentum on her side.
The break was however short lived as Sharapova responded immediately by breaking back. The Russian then remained a brick wall on the court throughout the second set which Diyas couldn't smash as Sharapova took the following five games to ease her way into the fourth round.
Sharapova hit 3 aces, 22 winners and 19 unforced errors during todays match. She also won 66% (56 out of 88) of all points played during the match. Shuai Peng next Awaiting Sharapova in the last sixteen will be Shuai Peng.
The 2014 US Open semi finalist overcame a tough first set before beating Yaroslava Shvedova 7-6 (9-7) 6-3. The fourth round match will be the sixth meeting between Peng and Sharapova.
